The United States and the European Union account for 45 percent of the global economy. They share free markets, democratic values, a military alliance, and $1.5 trillion in annual trade. However, the transatlantic partnership is challenged by U.S. threats of economic nationalism ("America First"), lack of commitment to addressing climate change, and the U.S. shift in focus from Europe to Asia. As a result, the outcome of the 2024 U.S. presidential election could be more consequential for Europe than ever before. Ambassador Standley will discuss the EU, its origins, its strengths and weaknesses, and what is at stake for it on November 5, 2024, Election Day. Will the transatlantic relationship thrive or wither?
