18th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival

Schedule:

7:30 pm - 9:30 pm: SFJAZZ Collective at Outpost Performance Space

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year and founded in 2004 by SFJAZZ, the SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star ensemble and composer’s workshop that represents what’s happening now in jazz.  Since the beginning, the Collective’s mission has been to perform newly commissioned pieces by each member of the group as well as fresh arrangements of works by modern masters. Through their pioneering approach of simultaneously honoring music’s greatest figures while championing new up-to-the-minute directions in jazz, the SFJAZZ Collective embodies SFJAZZ’s commitment to jazz as a living, ever-relevant art form. Downbeat writes that the SFJAZZ Collective “boasts as much or more collective talent, firepower and critical acclaim than any other jazz ensemble going.” To celebrate this special anniversary, the supergroup, featuring Chris Potter, music director, tenor saxophone, winds; David Sánchez, tenor saxophone; Mike Rodriguez, trumpet; Warren Wolf, vibraphone; Edward Simon, piano; Matt Brewer, bass; and Kendrick Scott, drums, will perform a landmark anniversary program that both honors the history of the group and looks ahead to its future. Paying tribute to the artists who have been honored by the Collective over its 20-year history as well as the composers who have been a part of the ensemble, this singular lineup of jazz masters will revisit past original compositions and arrangements from its innovative repertoire updated and re-imagined. Additionally, they will emphasize the spirit of their name by collectively composing a new suite dedicated to and inspired by the history of the ensemble. Come celebrate SFJAZZ Collective’s 20th Anniversary as well as our concert sponsor, Dr. Shirley Murphy, on her 80th birthday, along with 50 of her invited guests.
