Harry Belafonte was cool. He made Calypso cool. He made activism cool. A half century ago, before the Internet was even a sparkle in Al Gore’s eye, Belafonte was teaching the world about activism. Not the easy kind of activism either. Not the kind where you sit at home in your sweat pants and type on your computer that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. Belafonte was a Black protester at a time when Black people in the U.S. couldn’t even sit at the front of the bus or at a lunch counter without risking their lives.

When I was a kid, I knew Belafonte only as a movie star. I didn’t know anything about his activism until I was an adult. But in fact, he was an activist long before he became a star. Inspired by WWII, his activism began not about U.S. civil rights, but against global tyranny. He became passionate about democracy and justice years before he became part of the American Negro Theatre and began his career in show business. He was the real deal activist before everyone was claiming to be one.
