HAPPY SUNDAYS - a FREE, music, comedy and space fest- will return for its eighth year, taking over Long Beach’s cultural Zaferia District on Saturday August 24 and Sunday, August 25. The brainchild of wife and husband team and musicians Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, Julia Julia, Soft Palms) and Scott Montoya, HAPPY SUNDAYS was created to celebrate the vibrant community and creative spirit taking place in Long Beach, CA.

Imagined as the “anti-festival Festival”, HAPPY SUNDAYS will take over multiple venues across the city, showcasing the best up and coming artists in music and comedy as well as hosting educational panels and events.

Driven by the tagline “THERE’S MORE OUT THERE”, Julia and Scott Montoya are hoping that HAPPY SUNDAYS becomes the benchmark of talent in the Southern California scene - true destination for discovery.

Today, the fest’s lineup has been revealed and will include performances from all genres with buzzed about acts like Mike Watt & The Missingmen, Shamon Cassette, Soft Palms, Sego, Jagged Baptist Club, Dream Phases, Fartbarf, Pop Hysteria, Decent Times, Buzzed Lightbeer and so much more confirmed to perform with comedy and DJ sets to take place over the weekend as well. 2024 will mark the first year the festival will curate and host SPACE TALKS, where local aerospace companies will be able to speak directly to the community about developing projects happening in their city, as Long Beach (AKA Space Beach) has quickly re-emerged as one of the power house hubs in the ever-progressing world of aerospace.

“We're trying to show that a different way is possible,” explain the founders of HAPPY SUNDAYS. “Concert tickets and music festivals have become pricey and somewhat detached and we're trying to provide a more grassroots approach which benefits everyone involved. There's more music out there than what's on the radio and there's alternatives to paying high ticket prices and hidden fees. This is the first year as a two-day fest and we'd like to eventually expand it to a week-long city-wide event. We're stoked to be able to introduce the space talks to highlight the advancement in space travel and technology. Music and science are similar in that they both involve creativity and thinking outside the box,”.

“Independent venues are vital because they allow new artists to grow organically without the prejudice of likes and followers. The pandemic caused lots of independent music venues to get swallowed up by corporate promotion companies and majority of Long Beach's independently owned music venues are in Zaferia and 4th St, which is where our fest takes place.”

HAPPY SUNDAYS welcomes all ages to the festival*, so bring the entire family. Keeping aligned with entertainment and education, the festival has teamed up with Long Beach Symphony for an “instrument petting zoo”, which gives hands-on experience with classical instruments. Tattoo Heritage Project, a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the education and preservation of American Tattoo History, will be on site for discussion panels and live tattooing.

Venues confirmed for the festival include Alex’s Bar, Bamboo Club, Compound, Long Beach Art Theatre, Long Beach Playhouse and Port City Tavern.

Sponsors for HAPPY SUNDAYS include: Studios For Schools!, Vice Mayor Cindy Allen, Janice Hahn, Port of Long Beach and Zaferia Business Association.

HAPPY SUNDAYS FEST will take place Saturday August 24 and Sunday August 25. All shows are free to the public. The fest is all ages except for bars that are 21+ (Alex’s Bar, Port City Tavern).
