From: Bike and Roll New York CityDECEMBER 2023
Bike New Yorker,
I want to express my profound gratitude to you for helping to make 2023 an incredible year for Bike New York!
Thanks to you, we have expanded our programming, increased our impact, and grown our community outreach. None of this would have been possible without your support.
On #GivingTuesday, we launched an ongoing appeal to support our bicycle field trips. We continue raising critical funds to help kids experience their city in a new and exciting way. Bike New York offers NYC middle and high school students the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike for the first time and extend those skills to bike handling, safety, and navigating the city in group rides.
For many NYC kids, a bicycle represents freedom. Without worrying about subway costs or crosstown routes, the city can suddenly open up in a way they could never before imagine.
Highlights from our 2023 Fall Season
Bikes in School: Bike New York's education curriculum is now part of the regular NYC school day during physical education classes! The Middle School Bike Education Program is a partnership with the New York City Department of Education and the Department of Transportation serving 3045 students this fall. We’re thrilled to provide teacher training, curriculum, and maintenance for the Middle School bike fleet – 260 bicycles are transported by DOT trailer to schools in all five boroughs, increasing fitness, confidence, concentration, academic performance, and independence. In 2023, Bike New York partnered with TD Bank to provide 100 new bikes for the program and successfully advocated for the DOT to purchase eight new trailers to store and transport bike fleets to schools.
Bike Giveaways: Our community outreach team partnered with the Brooklyn Navy Yard's November Toy Drive to donate bicycles to local children, and in December, we collaborated with Good Co. Bike Club and the Carey Gabay Foundation at the Major Owens Center for additional bicycle giveaways. Thanks to our partners at National Grid and the Cooper Park Houses, 100 children received bicycles as a part of the Cooper Park Residents Council Holiday Gifting Party.
Free Bike Lights: Bike New York hosted our 12th annual free bike light giveaway across Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. In partnership with Kryptonite, we distributed bike lights to hundreds of NYC cyclists, brightening those mid-winter nights with safety lights.
Greenways: Bike New York helped the City of New York secure federal funding for developing six corridors of new greenway development, including: the Bronx side of the Harlem River, North Shore of Staten Island, Eastern Parkway extension to Highland Park (with potential to upgrade elements for existing greenways on Eastern and Ocean Parkways), Western Queens waterfront, including East River and east-west corridor along the northern edge of Astoria/Steinway, Southeastern Queens - Belt Parkway extension, Conduit Blvd, Eastern Bronx - Soundview, and connections. Public work on these corridors will begin on a staggered basis in 2024, and Bike New York will participate in all of the planning work.
Transportation for Asylum Seekers: Mechanics and staff at Recycle-A-Bicycle continue distributing bicycles to recent asylum seekers, providing much-needed affordable transportation to one of our city’s most vulnerable groups.
It is never too early to make those New Year’s Resolutions!
