All that Glitters: The Society of Gilders
December 13, 2022 – April 16, 2023

Gilding or “gilt,” is a decorative technique for applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces such as wood, stone, or metal to give a thin coating of gold. Precious objects, art, and architectural elements have been gilded by ancient Greek, Roman, Chinese, and Egyptian cultures for centuries. This technique was used throughout the history of European art and can be seen in innumerable masterworks of art.

The Albin Polasek Museum is delighted to partner with The Society of Gilders for this glorious look at this historic medium. This exhibition aims to reflect The Society of Gilders’ mission, “to preserve traditional gilding skills and techniques and to promote the highest standards in the practice of gilding.” Artists have not only been encouraged to submit finished pieces, but also works in progress.
