Schools and Libraries

January 22, 2023

From: Bay Village City School District

Happy New Year! I trust you had a wonderful holiday season with lots of family time. I hope you are excited for all that 2023 has to offer. I know I am!

It’s been an action-packed year so far – Home of the Rockets, passing the school levy, the Bay High Centennial and strategic plan work to name a few – and we’re not slowing down any time soon. I’d like to share some updates with you in person, so I’m continuing with my Coffee Chats this winter and spring, and I’m hoping you can stop by to say hello, ask questions and share your thoughts about the district. Meeting our families and residents is a priority of mine.

Here are the upcoming Coffee Chat Dates:

-Friday, February 17, 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Java Bay, 27225 Wolf Road

-Friday, March 31, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Cuyahoga County Public Library - Bay Village, 27400 Wolf Road

- Friday, May 5, 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Mojos, 600 Dover Center Road

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Personal…I’m a graduate of Baldwin Wallace University and Cleveland State University. My career began as an English teacher at Strongsville High School, and then I became a school counselor at Keystone High School. I came to Bay last year and made the transition to middle school, which I really, really love!

I have one younger sister who has a similar career to me. She is a Child Life Specialist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and works on coping skills with patients and their families. My mom has been a first grade teacher for 37 years, and my husband works in education, too! My extended family is quite large and we love to travel with each other. Our favorite spots to bring our families together are Disneyworld and Northern Michigan.

My husband and I have been raising our five kids in Avon. My children are Max, 12; Kate, 10; and my step-children are Franco, 16; Dominic, 13; and Cenzo, 11. Even though my husband might say otherwise, I’m hoping to add a puppy to our family in the future!

Where are you from? Berea, Ohio.

Hobbies and interests…Most of my free time is full of “mom stuff” – driving my kids to practices or watching their sporting events. We have soccer, football, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, cross country and track athletes in our house! But, I truly love watching them compete and build relationships, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I am so proud of the people they are becoming. I’m also a leader for my daughter’s Girl Scout troop.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? A few months after my son was born in 2011, I won a contest through The Today Show on NBC. My sister has always been a fan of the British royal family, so I submitted an entry on her behalf without telling her. Fast forward a few months later, and I had a TV crew in my living room, telling me that I won a trip to London with my sister and my mom – during the wedding celebration of Prince William and Princess Kate! It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ll never forget it!

What did you want to be when you grew up? A teacher like my mom, or a psychologist. I guess I ended up somewhere in between!

Favorite color…Pink.

Favorite thing about Bay Village Schools…The students of course – middle schoolers are SO unique. This age group is funny, creative and keeps us on our toes with something new each day. The kids are figuring out who they are, and it is a special time for sure. I’m lucky to be with them on this part of their journey.

Favorite thing about the CLE/Northeast Ohio…It is home to me, and there’s no place like home. The change of seasons in Cleveland always brings something fun to do. Right now, my family is looking forward to a Cavs game in a few weeks and a snow-tubing night in February. And of course… Cleveland has Mitchell’s Ice Cream!

Favorite quote…I always think of a simple motto that my uncle tells me: “faith, family, friends.” It’s not exactly a quote, but these three words are what I try to teach my kids, too.

Board of Education Elects New Officers; Honored by Students

During its January 10, 2023, Organizational Board Meeting, the Bay Village Board of Education elected officers for the 2023 calendar year. Dr. Scott Schulz was voted President and Dr. Andrey Stojic as Vice President.

“As a Board, we are excited about the direction the district is headed with the refresh of our strategic plan and the knowledge we gained at the recent Ohio School Board Association (OSBA) Capital Conference,” said President Dr. Scott Schulz. “We have an incredible team of teachers and administrators, who have a genuine passion for serving our students and community. We look forward to taking Bay Village Schools to the next level while honoring our shared values and strategic vision.”

The Board of Education also approved the following 2023 Board Meeting and Board Work Session schedule at the January 10 meeting. All Board meetings and Work Sessions will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office, 377 Dover Center Road. All meetings are open to the public.

January is also School Board Recognition Month, and Bay High School Senior Class President Renee Duffy read a Proclamation issued by Gov. Mike DeWine in honor of Ohio’s School Board Members. Renee also shared what she appreciates about Bay Village Schools, and personally thanked the Board for its service. “I would like to thank the Bay Village Board of Education for providing students with countless opportunities to succeed in our future,” said Renee.

District Media Specialist Teacher Melissa Wolf and Bay Middle School makerspace students Jane Fanter, Esli Gjeci and Owen Mendez presented the Board with personalized handcrafts to share gratitude from the district, and Anne Hart’s second-grade students made thank-you notes for the Board members.

Sincerely,
The Bay Village Board of Education
