The Holdovers
From director Alexander Payne
From acclaimed director Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Nebraska, The Descendants), The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

Priscilla
From director Sofia Coppola
When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny) meets Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi) at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a gentle best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla's long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945)
Set among Brooklyn tenements circa 1912, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a portrait of the Nolans, an Irish-American family living in financially challenging circumstances, often made worse by father Johnny’s drinking and employment problems. But matriarch Katie keeps the family together during all of the obstacles, caring for son Neeley and daughter Francie, as well as Katie’s outspoken, oft-married sister Sissy. But just as Francie’s gift for writing opens up new avenues, more tragic developments test the family’s resolve. Director Elia Kazan’s first film, which is based on Betty Smith’s novel – a bestseller in the U.S. but also one of the most popular books among American soldiers overseas in WWII – is a sensitive, masterful adaptation.

Night to be Gone
With filmmaker Loren Marsh in-person
In a neo-noir destined to become a classic, Omer, a pool hustler and his partner arrive in Berlin for a high-stakes game against a notorious gambler, The Sultan. But after getting hustled themselves, they are forced to rethink their plans. Based on a true story and shot on a tiny budget in the actual locations in Berlin, Night to be Gone uses noir tropes to explore an African immigrant's attempt to make a better life for himself, and perhaps find love, in a cold and unwelcoming place.

This Just In!: The love-hate relationship between Hollywood and the News Media
The Sweet Smell of Success
Hosted by Wallace Matthews former columnist for Newsday, the New York Post and ESPN
In the swift, cynical Sweet Smell of Success, Burt Lancaster stars as the vicious Broadway gossip columnist J. J. Hunsecker, and Tony Curtis as Sidney Falco, the unprincipled press agent Hunsecker ropes into smearing the up-and-coming jazz musician romancing his beloved sister. Featuring deliciously unsavory dialogue, a brilliantly structured script by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman, and noirish neon cityscapes from Oscar-winning cinematographer James Wong Howe, Sweet Smell of Success is a cracklingly cruel dispatch from the kill-or-be-killed wilds of 1950s Manhattan.
