Comments Welcomed For Proposed Burke Heritage Park Improvements

Proposed Burke Heritage Park Improvements. We Welcome Your Comments!

The Burke Heritage Park project will preserve the open area at the center of the park; however, new educational, recreational, and sustainable features are the highlights of this important community project.

Plant Demonstration:
The first portion of the project upgrades the existing xeriscape garden with local native flora to highlight the depth, variety, and environmental benefits of this landscape to the community. Included with the project are interpretive and educational panels, which allow students and residents to learn how California native plants help combat climate change, reduce water consumption, and provide a habitat for local wildlife. The improvements are funded by the State of California and in partnership with community organizations.

Recreational Amenities:
The second portion adds new landscape and irrigation, looped walking path, lighting, drinking fountain, seating, and a small inclusive playground. Inclusive playgrounds provide accessibility and sensory benefits to create inclusive spaces that help kids of all ages and abilities enjoy playing together.  These new amenities are funded by the State of California, under the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program.

Bioswales:
The third component consists of the Burke Heritage Park and Marengo Yard Stormwater Capture Project, which shall divert stormwater for infiltration to increase groundwater supplies. In the park, the project will add seasonal wetland and bioswales features that capture and quickly absorb stormwater, improving water quality and supplementing water supply. The improvements are funded by the California Safe Clean Water Project.
