Yorktown Mud Bridge Repairs Continue
City Consultant's Report Sent To TxDOT For Peer Review

On Monday, December 12, the City initiated an emergency closure of the Yorktown Mud Bridge in the 8600 block of Yorktown Boulevard for repairs to a sinkhole resulting from damage to the bridge's riprap embankment. In addition, the project included restoring four of the fifty-five pilings that support the bridge. City officials estimated this project would take approximately 30 days to complete.

Out of an abundance of caution, City staff retained a consultant to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the remaining fifty-one pilings. That survey discovered an additional eighteen columns that may also need repair. To verify if these damaged pilings affect the structural integrity of the bridge, TxDOT has agreed to conduct a peer review of the City’s inspection. In addition, TxDOT’s conclusions will be helpful in determining cost estimates for the project.

These recent developments will lead to the project’s 30-day completion date being extended. "Based on our most recent findings, we will work with our contractor to provide a timeline for the additional work identified," said Public Works Director Ernesto De La Garza. "This will definitively impact our one-month anticipated timeframe."

The City has been working closely with TxDOT to address the Yorktown Mud Bridge. Most recently, City staff met with the State to discuss expediting the replacement of the bridge, which was expected to begin in 2026. It is now anticipated that the utility coordination and environmental assessments in support of the replacement bridge project will begin in 2025.  

"I would like to thank TxDOT for their collaboration by working to accelerate the letting date of the Mud Bridge and assisting with their bridge expertise," De La Garza said.
