The Lifeguard monitors for patron safety and First-Aid in coordination with aquatics personnel by enforcing aquatic and pool rules and recognizing and responding to aquatic incidents during normal operations. Work is done seasonally.
Distinguishing Career Features
The Lifeguard is a seasonal, part time position in the Parks and Recreation Department. The Lifeguard requires physical fitness to swim and carry and lift a patron from water.
Requirements
- Provides daily swimmer and aquatic facility patron surveillance from guard stand, cautions swimmers and patrons of rule violations to enforce pool and aquatic facility safety; identifies and performs the appropriate protocols for distressed patrons immediately.
- Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules, regulations, and schedules.
- Assists in instructing patrons about proper swim techniques and water safety.
- Partakes in appropriate emergency and rescue technique drills and safety training in-services.
- Administers First-Aid to aquatic facility patrons daily; properly administers CPR and First-Aid as needed.
- Reports injuries, accidents, and assistance rendered to patrons and documents each occurrence daily.
- Assists and performs daily cleaning and closing duties.
- Assists with pre-season operational and maintenance tasks.
- Assists in the inspection of aquatic facilities daily using an established checklist. Reports unsafe conditions and equipment to the supervisor.
- Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintains a high standard of customer service.
- Recognizes and responds to all urgent situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Summary
Knowledge and Skills
The position requires basic knowledge and application of lifeguarding, surveillance, and rescue techniques. Requires basic understanding of the characteristics of the facility and the schedules, policies, rules, and procedures. Requires sufficient written and oral language skills to document work activity and give specific instructions. Requires knowledge of and skill at giving First-Aid and CPR to adult and children patrons.
Abilities
Requires the ability to react calmly, quickly, and effectively in emergency situations and the ability to identify distressed patrons. Requires the ability to apply lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques. Requires the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Requires the ability to pass pre-employment physical skills and knowledge evaluation as required by the department. Requires the ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork. Requires the ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions in English language. Requires the ability to work productively as part of a community service team. Requires the ability to work rotating and split work shifts and weekends and holidays.
Physical Abilities
The position performs work of an active nature. Requires sufficient physical and cardiovascular ability to successfully pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification course. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to carry, lift, or move items. Requires visual acuity to observe continuous movement of people and equipment. Requires auditory and speech ability to hear calls for help and project voice to a group of people.
Education and Experience
The position requires education equivalent to completion of 11th grade.
Licenses and Certificates
American Red Cross Lifeguard certification. American Red Cross First-Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with regards to safety and environmental considerations from physical effort, temperature extremes, and slippery/unstable surfaces.
