From: City Of KellerWhat a remarkable year we’ve had together here in Keller! As we prepare to welcome 2023, we reflect on all our blessings and accomplishments of 2022.
Continuing on our successes from last year, 2022 proved to be an amazing year for our community — one in which we oversaw the single-largest tax relief measure in Keller’s history, began work on our historic infrastructure maintenance package of sidewalk and street repairs, approved a design contract for a multimillion-dollar upgrade to the Keller Sports Park, strengthened public safety and launched our enhanced school safety initiative, attracted and accelerated exciting economic development and redevelopment along our main commercial corridors in Old Town Keller and on Hwy. 377, and approved an FY 2022-2023 budget reflective of our residents’ priorities that will strengthen Keller’s standing as Texas’s Most Family Friendly City.
Looking ahead to 2023, Keller’s future looks as bright as ever. We will uphold our commitment to elevating family life, improving and maintaining sound infrastructure, attracting vibrant economic development, and ensuring public safety while demonstrating fiscal discipline. Of note, keep an eye out for projects such as the reconstruction of Johnson Road, the repaving of Whitley Road and Shady Grove Road, median beautification along Keller Parkway, completion of the “festival street” construction on Bates Street, ongoing investments in our parks and trails, and expanded programming and operating hours at the Keller Senior Activities Center.
None of this can be accomplished without our fantastic team here in Keller, including past and present colleagues on the City Council, city staff, board and commission members, volunteers and, most importantly, our Keller residents. It is an absolute privilege to serve our community, and as we say goodbye to 2022, I look forward to what we will continue to accomplish together in 2023. Happy New Year, Keller!
Retirees leave holes in Parks & Recreation hearts
It’s a bittersweet end to the year for our Parks & Recreation Department as we say farewell to two incredible public servants.
Perfectly suited for this line of work, Debbie Park (yep) is retiring after 20 years with the City of Keller. The department’s administrative secretary answers calls, manages reservations and registrations, tackles board agendas and minutes, and has worked countless community events over her two decades. The official mom of the office, always helping no matter the task, she’s known for her white rain hairspray, instant coffee, love for Chick-fil-a, and always knowing the weather forecast — an attribute that earned her the nickname “Debbie Delkus.” Sweet, honest and immensely dependable, her golden heart and head of institutional knowledge will be terribly missed.
“I’m going to be lost without her,” Community Services Director Cody Maberry said. “She was so gracious to me when I started here, and she’s the one I always went to when I needed answers.”
A master in the field, Chad Wheeler is retiring after 22 years with us. The Sports Park Crew Leader has spent his career caring for the city’s parks, green space, sports fields, landscaping, irrigation systems, play equipment, and more, working through Texas summers, extreme freezes, and event-ending thunderstorms to serve our residents and visitors by keeping Keller beautiful, safe and fun.
His colleagues describe him as happy, easy-going, a dedicated worker and a compassionate leader — someone who never struggled to recruit or retain team members — and his department-famous quote, “Don’t be a stick in the head,” will no doubt outlast him, passed down for Keller Parks & Rec generations to come.
We’ll miss you, Chad. And a final reminder from Parks Foreman Bobby Bailey: “Don’t chase the mosquito trucks!”
CWD adds Dec. 31 to leaf collection schedule
Want to head into the new year with a leaf-free yard? CWD has added a special leaf collection this weekend to help them keep up with the volume they're seeing around town. Sign up (for free) by noon on Friday, Dec. 30, at www.cityofkeller.com/leaves to participate in Saturday's pickup.
HSNT offers year-end adoption special to clear shelters
To find caring families for as many dogs as possible before the end of the year, the Humane Society of North Texas is offering $5 adoptions on all dogs, regardless of age or size.
As always, every adoptable pet at the Keller Regional Animal Adoption Center is spayed/neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated. So don’t miss out on this exceptional opportunity to adopt a great pup!
For shelter hours and pet availability, visit www.hsnt.org/keller-regional.
Expect to hear professional fireworks Saturday night
FYI! The Entrada at Westlake development on the southeast corner of Hwy. 114 and Davis Boulevard in Westlake has planned a New Year’s Eve fireworks display at midnight Saturday, Dec. 31.
Residents in north Keller and throughout Westlake can expect to hear loud popping and booming sounds during the show. If you would like a closer look, Entrada will have a designated viewing area at the top of their parking garage.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.entrada-westlake.com/new-years-eve.
Don't bait burglars with holiday clean-up
Here’s a friendly reminder: Don’t advertise your expensive holiday gifts curbside!
Criminals take note of homes with boxes for pricy items on the curb for garbage collection, so we recommend concealing your purchases by breaking them down so that they squeeze into your recycling cart and saving what doesn’t fit for your next pick-up day. You can also run your extra boxes to the curb just as CWD rolls up if you’re hanging out at home this week.
We know you hate clutter, but we think you’d hate unwanted guests and filling out police reports even more! And remember: If you See Something, Say Something.
Toss those live trees curbside
Christmas tree disposal is simple this year! Keller customers can place their live Christmas trees curbside for collection by CWD.
Trees will follow the same schedule as regular yard waste. That means trees collected on customers' first service day of the week will go to a Living Earth facility, while those gathered on the second service day will go to the landfill. Please be sure to remove all ornaments, tinsel, etc.
Note: There is no separate drop-off location for trees this year as there has been in the past.
Plan ahead this weekend to avoid drunken driving
New Year's Eve gatherings are a great time to reflect on and celebrate relationships and ventures old and new, but these occasions can turn tragic when people decide to drink and drive.
Though drunken driving is a problem every day on U.S. roads, historically, there has been a rise in alcohol-related accidents during the holidays. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, there were 209 drunken driving-related fatalities between Dec. 14 and Jan. 1, 2021.
Over the years, Keller has seen a drop in Christmas and New Year's alcohol-related arrests, and we'd like to see that trend continue; Captain Jared Lemoine attributes that to rideshare services and residents planning ahead.
"We will be patrolling the streets to ensure a safe holiday season," he said. "We strongly encourage the community to utilize resources such as Uber, Lyft, or a designated driver."
We are just over a day away from the ball dropping, and as 2022 gives way to 2023, we wish you all a healthy, happy and SAFE new year.
