From: City Of OdessaKOB Will Visit Zavala Elementary, First Sustainability Scholarship Recipients
Zavala students receive first sustainability scholarship.
Zavala Elementary students are the first Sustainability Scholarship recipients!
Keep Odessa Beautiful will visit Zavala Elementary, 1201 Clifford St., on Friday, February 10, at 11 a.m. to discuss and support the school’s Choice program called, “Community and Careers.”
This sustainability project includes a garden which would bring an opportunity for students to learn where food comes from, give them opportunity to be outside and connect with nature in an outdoor learning lab. Students can grow vegetables and herbs to cook with.
All this leads towards learning valuable skills that they can use at home and in their future. This also has an impact on their social emotional wellbeing, increasing self-esteem as well as beautifying the school environment.
This would be a great opportunity for outside agencies, such as the Master Gardeners or Sibley Center, to come and provide guidance and mentoring for students.
Zavala is asking for supplies for their Choice program. Below are some of the items they are looking for.
- Tools for gardening including hoes, rakes, shovels, spades, trowels, water hoses and nozzles, watering cans, gloves, stakes or etc.
- Various Seeds
- Soil and fertilizer
- Raised beds- This could include using recycled materials such as wooden pallets or used tires.
- Benches (these could be made from recycled materials as well
If you have any questions or items to donate, you can contact the school at (432) 456-1239 or email Erin Reddell, Assistant Principal, at [email protected] or Sandy Huertas, Choice Teacher, at [email protected]. Contact Keep Odessa Beautiful at (432) 335-4686 or [email protected].
