Dare To See The World With The Outer Banks Film Society

Created to foster a community that appreciates the art of film, Dare Arts is proud to introduce the Outer Banks Film Society which will screen independent films, movie classics, documentaries, world cinema, shorts, and the very best new releases starting in September.

Dare Arts has been working with film enthusiasts Gaye Morris and David Morris to develop the Outer Banks Film Society. Gaye has an extensive background in film education along with film society and festival work. While living in Britain, she was on the Board of Directors for York Cinema and a founding member and programmer of the Ripon Film Society. She has also served on film festival juries in Venice, Locarno, and Cannes.

“I am thrilled that we are able to offer a film society to our community,” said Gaye Morris. “There is nothing like this on the Outer Banks, and so many folks I have spoken to have expressed a desire to see foreign language and independent films, and we can do that! From my experience, film society members love good films and appreciate the concept of film seasons that put them together with other film lovers.”

The community is invited to come out to Dare Arts in Manteo for Opening Night of the Outer Banks Film Society on Tues., Sept. 12 at 6pm. The Opening Night is free and open to the public and will include a screening of the 1957 film Twelve Angry Men. There will be pre-screening refreshments, guest speakers and a post-screening discussion.

All films will be screened at Dare Arts in Manteo, unless otherwise specified. Doors will open at 6pm and films will start at 6:30pm.

“Watching foreign and independent films opens windows into the lives of people we don't meet or even see every day, especially when we live in a small community,” said David Morris. “The Outer Banks Film Society has me excited about the chance to watch excellent, unusual films along with other local folks who enjoy the craft, art, and emotional experience of fine filmmaking.”

Unlike purchasing a ticket to go see a movie at the local theater, you join the Outer Banks Film Society through an annual or seasonal membership. An annual membership is $140 and includes 12 films, plus extra events that are only open to members. Seasonal (spring or fall) memberships include six films per season.

Film society memberships can be purchased online at DareArts.org/filmsociety, over the phone by calling Dare Arts, and in-person at the Dare Arts Gallery in Manteo. Memberships will also be available to purchase at opening night.

The Outer Banks Film Society will also offer enriched film programming that includes film-related speakers, filmmaker discussions, educational programs, and special events.

“We felt like it was time to expand our film offerings and Gaye and David have been incredibly helpful in bringing the Outer Banks Film Society to fruition,” said Dare Arts Executive Director Jessica Sands. “I am excited about this opportunity- for the cost of a theater movie, you get a unique film, some lively discussion and deep connections with other members of our community.”
