February is Black History Month -- and the entire community is invited to participate in a host of free, fun, and educational events organized by the Palm Springs Black History Month Committee, in partnership with the City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Art Museum. Here is a list of events coming up:

Black History Month Kick Off, Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive. Thursday, Feb. 1, 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Event celebrates African American culture and arts as well as the Harlem Renaissance. The Palm Springs High School Choir and James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center drumline and drill team will perform.

37thannual Black History Month Awards Gala, Saturday, Feb. 3, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Margaritaville Palm Springs, 1600 N. Indian Canyon Drive. Recognizing individuals and organizations in the community who have allied or contributed to the success of African American achievements in Palm Springs. Honorees include: Continuing Sponsor Award: Olga Montes, Clergy of the Year Award: Pastor Rodney Croom, Community Service Award: Joaquin Galeano, Community Partnership Award: Palm Springs Art Museum, Community Advocate Award: David Weiner, Trail Blazer Award: Brothers of the Desert, Corporate Sponsor Award: Palm Springs Cultural Center, Social Justice Award: United Methodist Church, Student Awards: Jonathan Covington, Mikayla Johnson, Lyzset Waits, Mylah McLelland, James O. Sugarshack: A Jazz Inspired Night of Music at the Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive, Thursday, Feb. 8, 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Featuring Hope Diamond and her jazz band.

Men’s Basketball Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 17, 9 a.m.  James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, 480 Tramview Road.

Rhythm & Hues, showcasing the talent of local fashion designer Aneka Brown and featuring jazz melodies from Wayne Cobham, Thursday, Feb. 15, 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive.

Palm Springs Black History Caravan, Monday, Feb. 19, 11 a.m. Departure location, James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center parking lot, 480 Tramview Road.

Sugar Shack: Blues and Soul-inspired night sessions, featuring Norman Carter, former lead singer of Iconic Delphonics, Thursday, Feb. 22, 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive.

37th annual Palm Springs Black History Month Parade & Town Fair, Saturday, Feb. 24. Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. followed by Town Fair from noon to 6 p.m. in the Downtown Park across from the Palm Springs Art Museum

Black History Month Block Party: Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop, Thursday, Feb. 29, 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive. Celebrate the culture and music that originated and has been shaped by Black America for decades. Attendees will be able to participate in interactive activities such as graffiti art, hip-hop dancing, and more.
