10:00 am: Art-for-FALL Teen Juried Art Exhibition

Art-for-FALL is a juried art exhibition open to 7th-12th grades.

Stop by The Clay Center to see this FestivFALL exhibition highlighting the work of local aspiring artists. The show will be up at the Ticketing Lobby of The Clay Center from October 13-22 with an Awards Ceremony at in the Susan Runyan Maier Sculpture Garden on October 22 at 1pm.

The Harvest Art Fair also includes free make-and-take kids activities, live music, and more! Make-and-take activities are provided by community volunteer groups.

3:00 pm - 3:30 pm: Inside Out Public Art Walking Tour and Bike Tour at the Capitol

Join the National Parks Conservation Association on a public art adventure starting with a 30-minute guided walking tour inside of the WV State Capitol Building and followed by a 1-hour guided bike tour exploring the statutes and monuments on the Capitol Complex Grounds.

The walking tour meets at 3pm in front of the WV Coal Miner Statue.

7:30 pm - 9:30 pm: The Witches of Wolfhaven & Warlock Operetta

The two operas (Witches of Wolfhaven and Warlock Concert) take place in a mystical world of witches and warlocks. While Gertrude belongs to the benevolent Wolfhaven coven, Gustav is a member of the clan led by the evil witch Kannika. The two young people meet and fall in love. Will Gertrude save Gustav from his evil ways, or will their differences tear them apart?

“Gustav and Gertrude” (Two original operas by locals Mark Hornbaker and Caroline Chamness) performed by the Academy Singers and members of the WV State Philharmonic under Scott Woodard with special guest singers Betsy Baer and Ashley Dannewitz.

This is a FREE performance at the Davis Fine Arts Center Theater at West Virginia State University.

Attendees can stroll along at their own pace, dip in and out of stores and stop off along the way for a bite to eat at a downtown restaurant.

Downtown Charleston ArtWalk is a free, self-guided walking tour of Charleston’s shops, galleries and businesses featuring regional art, performances, crafts, fashion, antiques and much more. Typically held the third Thursday of each month, participating shops and organizations extend their hours for browsing, shopping and mingling.

West Virginia Humanities Council presents the 41st annual McCreight Lecture in the Humanities, delivered by author, journalist, and tech humanist Cory Doctorow. He is a 2020 inductee into the Canadian Science Fiction Hall of Fame and author of over two dozen books, including two this year:  technothriller Red Team Blues, and a new work of nonfiction, The Internet Con. Doctorow will discuss ways to exert more control of our own digital futures in an increasingly computerized world.

Harshman’s WOMAN IN RED ANORAK, won the Blue Lynx Poetry Prize and was published in 2018 by Lynx House / University of Washington Press. His fourteenth children’s book, FALLINGWATER…, co-authored with Anna Smucker, was published by Roaring Brook/Macmillan in 2017 and was an Amazon Book of the Month. He is also co-winner of the 2019 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award. Poems have been anthologized by Kent State University, the University of Iowa, University of Georgia, and the University of Arizona. Harshman’s newest collection of poems, THE SHADOW TESTIMONIES, has just been scheduled for publication by Salmon Press in the Republic of Ireland.
