From: Galerie Lelong GalleryGalerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to announce that Mildred Thompson’s large-scale triptych, Magnetic Fields (1991), has been promised to the Menil Collection, Houston, Texas. The work continues to be on view through March 26, 2023 in the landmark Menil Collection building in conversation with works by Takis.
The special foyer installation pairs these two artists who were fascinated by the intersection of art and science. In Thompson’s large, celebrated painting Magnetic Fields (1991), spirals of red paint radiate across a yellow field and collect around a central vortex, as though pulled by a gravitational force, punctuated by slips of contrasting cerulean blue. Thompson associated the restless, rhythmic energy of the painting with sonic vibrations and electromagnetic fields. In the Menil’s installation, Magnetic Fields is juxtaposed with four metal sculptures by the Greek artist Takis. The spindly, swaying, antenna-like works from Takis’s Signal series of the 1950s were inspired by radio and radar technologies. Like Thompson, Takis repeatedly explored themes of magnetism and the cosmos in his work.
