Governor Glenn Youngkin Announces Appointment of Banci Tewolde as Director of the Virginia Department of General Services

RICHMOND, VA - Governor Glenn Youngkin is pleased to announce the appointment of Banci Tewolde as the new Director of the Virginia Department of General Services (DGS), effective June 25, 2024. Ms. Tewolde, currently serving as the Associate Director with the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget, brings extensive experience and expertise to this important role.

Her proven track record in managing complex projects and her deep understanding of government operations will be invaluable as we strive to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our state services. I am confident that under her leadership, the DGS will continue to uphold the highest standards of excellence, ensuring that our infrastructure and services meet the needs of all Virginians," said Governor Glenn Youngkin. 

Ms. Tewolde has been a dedicated public servant in various capacities within Virginia state government for over 20 years. Her deep knowledge of state government operations, legislative and budget processes, and state programs positions her well to lead the DGS. 

Ms. Tewolde was originally appointed by Governor McDonnell to oversee the statewide prisoner reentry efforts, subsequently serving as Deputy Secretary of Public Safety. Her tenure as an Assistant Attorney General saw her representing officials, state employees, and agencies in state and federal courts, where she reviewed contracts, leases, and procurement processes. Additionally, her experience as an Attorney Advisor for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and as an adjunct faculty member at Pennsylvania State University further underscores her comprehensive understanding of public safety and legal matters.  

In her role as Associate Director with the Department of Planning and Budget, Ms. Tewolde has been responsible for budget management, capital development, and execution activities for all state public safety agencies in the Commonwealth. Her collaborative work with other state agencies has been instrumental in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of public safety operations. 

Ms. Tewolde earned her JD from the University of Maryland School of Law and a Master's degree from Old Dominion University. The Commonwealth is fortunate to have her in this pivotal role, where her leadership will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success and progress of the Virginia Department of General Services.
