Arts and Entertainment
November 15, 2024
From: Historic Albany FoundationThank you for joining us for an amazing BUILT!
Whether you boogied with us at the Disco Ball, attended First Friday, built your personal art collection (or bid up others!) during the art auction, shared your talents as one of our 151 artists and 30 Holiday Shop vendors, passionately supported as a member of the honorary committee or as a sponsor, browsed the art during gallery hours, lent your vintage car, provided incredible hospitality (including tasty food & drink!), or were part of our incredibly hard-working group of event committee members, volunteers & staff: THANK YOU!
Just as our local built environment comes together with a combination of many styles, architects, materials, contractors, and artisans, BUILT (the art auction) comes together through the combined efforts of our community. You make this event, and by extension, the preservation & advocacy work of Historic Albany Foundation, possible.

History Corner
Looking back at the making of Empire State Plaza in Albany
By David M. Johnson, Paul Grondahl
On June 21, 1965, Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller gathered with state and local officials and other dignitaries and laid the South Mall cornerstone — a 7,500-pound block of white granite quarried near Cortland, N.H. — that sealed a document box containing artifacts in the foundation of a long, low-slung building taking shape along Swan Street near the intersection with State Street.

NEWS
Jim Turner and the Future of Preservation Trades
Ten years ago, the National Trust for Historic Preservation started HOPE Crew (Hands-On Preservation Experience), its hands-on, trades training initiative. Since 2014 the program has completed 175 projects, trained over 860 young people—including veterans—and engaged over 3,750 volunteers in historic trades. While the impact of the program is large, the challenges still remain.
