From: Homewood School District #153

Last week, the citizens of Homewood voted overwhelmingly in support of a referendum for Homewood School District #153. Our district has a proud tradition of providing a well-rounded education to nearly 2,000 students a year, with a strong emphasis on not only traditional academic areas such as math and Language Arts but also the visual and performing arts and physical education five days a week. Our mission is “All students will learn; all students will be served,” and we could not achieve this mission without the support of you, our taxpayers. Please know that we take very seriously the responsibility to be good stewards of your tax dollars, as previous boards of education have done for decades. Most importantly, we want to express our deepest gratitude to all of Homewood for the investment you have made in our current and future generations of children. In a time when so many communities seek to cut spending on education, the citizens of Homewood have shown our neighboring communities and all of Illinois where true priorities should lie.

With gratitude,

Scott McAlister, Superintendent of Schools
Shelly Marks, President, Board of Education

Veterans Day 2022

Instead of closing our schools for the Veterans Day Holiday, District 153 made the decision a few years ago to remain open so that our students could learn more about the reasons for the holiday and to pay tribute to those who served or currently serving in the military.

On Friday, Nov. 11, welcomed about 20 local veterans and members of the military to James Hart School for a flag ceremony, school assembly and breakfast.

Veterans and service members were welcomed to James Hart School with homemade thank you cards and letters.

Our honored guests were greeted with a standing ovation at the James Hart school assembly and were treated to musical performances by the Panther band, choir, and orchestra.

Breakfast was served after the assembly where our guests received even more thank yous handmade by students at Churchill and Willow Schools.

Panther TV made a special video honoring the loved ones of staff and students who served or are currently serving. Enjoy!

Coming to See Madagascar? Bring a Donation for the South Suburban Humane Society!

The "animals" of James Hart’s Madagascar cast/crew have made it their mission to help local animals in need at the South Suburban Humane Society. Cast/crew members volunteered at the Homewood shelter making treats, interacting with the dogs and cats and providing exercise.

They are inviting Madagascar audiences to bring a donation (see list to the right) to performances on Nov. 17 & 18.

We are #153Proud of these talented student musicians who represented our school district at the ILMEA District 1 Festival on Nov. 5th at Lincolnway Central. Keep that beautiful music coming!
