Nathaniel Seelen, former HLM youth rower in the 1990's is nowadays a professional musician in Boston performing with a number of groups in the city as well as the artistic director of the Boston Festival of New Jewish Music. He will be returning to HLM this summer for a performance of klezmer music. Nat will share his knowledge of klezmer music, teach us about its origins and have some fun. In 1891, four intrepid women from Lowell, Massachusetts sailed to a remote island in Boston Harbor for a 17-day escape from New England's prim and proper society. Relive their remarkable journey and journal with author Stephanie Schorow.

This book is the result of intense work by Friends of Boston Harbor Island volunteers, led by Stephanie Schorow author of East of Boston: Notes from the Boston Harbor Islands.

Funding from Mass Humanities has been provided through the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

These performances have been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy Demands Wisdom. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this performance does not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Comfort Birds - Wood Carving Workshop with Mike Davison

Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Mike Davison will be leading this three-hour workshop as we craft our own "Comfort Birds". Originally conceived as a small wood carving that can fit in the palm of one's hand, these sweet birds are often made as a token of affection and support for a loved one in need. Mike has personally carved hundreds of these birds, many distributed to local veterans, and will share with us the technique for making our own. Stating that after his many years as a test pilot, he was “looking to pursue something more holistic,” Mike found a second career as a full-time wood carver. Beginning with crafting wooden spoons Mike now carves everything from the Town of Foxborough Seal to marine creatures, pipes, and these marvelous wee birds which he states are the most impactful objects has made. You won't want to miss this opportunity to create your own personal comfort bird.

The museum's Summer Adventure Program offers seven weeks of discovery and exploration for children ages 5-11. Summer Adventure meets Tuesday - Thursday with two options: our regular morning program from 9;30 - 12:30 pm or our extended program 9:30 - 3:00 pm, with a different theme each week. Each week includes hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, and a fun mix of history, science, and arts. Sign up for as few or as many weeks as you wish.

The museum's Summer Explorer Program is a new, exciting and engaging opportunity for young people ages 12-16 to learn about the natural and cultural history of Boston Harbor while developing maritime skills.

This 7-week program offers a different area of focus each week with all programming originating at our HLM Windmill Point Boathouse including our fleet of open water rowing vessels, the boathouse, the harbor and harbor islands. Areas of focus include: safety on the water, rowing and commanding (coxing) open water rowing craft, operating outboard powered boats, harbor piloting and navigation, marine environment, boat maintenance and boat building, while making connections to each other, to our past, and to our future.

As summer rolls along, Friday Painters in Hull, a joint effort with the Hull Lifesaving Museum and Hull Artists continues our artistic adventures. We post a variety of painting locations that encourage artists to enjoy Hull's natural beauty and diverse landscapes. Mixed in the locations are seaside, historic locations, vistas and private gardens. It is organized so that we can take advantage of the morning light and finish in time not to get the afternoon burn. Open and free to all, any level or ability. There are no instructions given, just bring your supplies and enjoy. A chair, hat and water bottle are recommended.
