Government and Politics

MADISON, Wis. — Earlier on Sep 12th, State Assembly candidate Yee Leng Xiong, WisDems Second Vice Chair Tricia Zunker, and former Wausau Mayor John Robinson held a virtual press conference to highlight Democrats’ commitment to improving the lives of working families.

Speakers highlighted efforts by Wisconsin Democrats to expand opportunities for Wisconsinites on issues including health care, child care, broadband access, and infrastructure. At the same time, Wisconsin Republicans have held our state back by refusing to expand BadgerCare, eliminating funding to continue Child Care Counts, and blocking a plan to guarantee paid family and medical leave for Wisconsin workers. Wisconsin Democrats are fighting to retake majorities in the State Legislature to stop Wisconsin Republicans’ attacks on working Wisconsinites and give power back to the people.

Watch the press conference here and see what speakers had to say, in part, below:

State Assembly Candidate Yee Leng Xiong: “Democrats want to expand Medicaid, which would save Wisconsinites money on healthcare premiums and prescription drugs, resulting in better health outcomes and greater financial security for families. But despite broad public support for expanding Medicaid, certain legislators have refused to lift a finger to address the skyrocketing cost of health care, turning down every attempt to expand BadgerCare for over a decade. Wisconsinites are fed up with the ongoing partisan disputes and lack of action—what they truly desire is true representatives who are willing to get things done and address their concerns. ”

WisDems Second Vice Chair Tricia Zunker: “As a former school board president and a busy working mom, I have long believed that what is good for our kids is good for our community. Governor Evers and Wisconsin Democrats share this belief as well, but Republicans have continued to make it more difficult for working families—-they have eliminated funding for the Child Care Counts program, a program that ensures child care is affordable and accessible for working Wisconsin families.”

Former Wausau Mayor John Robinson: “In Marathon County, we currently have 8,443 homes or businesses that are either unserved or underserved [by broadband] and are at a disadvantage. […] In the last budget, the Governor requested $750 million of additional funding for broadband—the Legislature gave him zero.”
