From: Institute Of Contemporary Art MuseumThe summer heat doesn't stop and neither does ICA LA's summer programming! This month is all about collaboration and community and we've got a full roster or programs where artists, curators, writers, directors, and organizations all come together and make space to gather, learn, and transform here at ICA LA.
To kick things off, next Wednesday, August 9, join ICA LA and our friends from Art21 for a screening and conversation focused on the work of Christine Sun Kim whose Bounce Back mural is currently featured on the exterior of the museum. In partnership with Printed Matter’s upcoming LA Art Book Fair, on Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13, ICA LA is hosting free, hands-on workshops with Savi Factory, Press Press and the Center for Liberatory Practice & Poetry.
The collaborations continue on Wednesday, August 16 and Thursday, August 17 with IN PROCESS: Carmen Argote with Carmen Vargas, an ongoing series of performative actions in the galleries by artist Carmen Argote with her mother Carmen Vargas in conjunction with I won't abandon you, I see you, we are safe. That Wednesday, August 16, we will also be hosting a virtual program with artist Tr??ng Công Tùng and poet Quyên Nguy?n-Hoàng who will be Zooming in together from Vietnam for a discussion about Tr??ng’s process and his relationship spirituality and nature.
We wrap up the month with a selection of exhibition tours that you do not want to miss. First, on Saturday, August 26, we have two back to back artist-led tours that celebrate contemporary art from Vietnam on view in LA. The day begins at the Wende Museum with artist Phung Huynh’s tour of Vietnam in Transition, 1976 – Present and concludes at ICA LA with artist Bruce Yonemoto’s tour of Tr??ng Công Tùng. On Wednesday, August 30, journey with Carmen Argote and collaborator Daniela Lieja Quintanar to Argote’s home and studio in Boyle Heights for a unique experience of Argote’s current exhibition. We conclude our week of tours on Friday, September 1 with a special exhibition walkthrough with Argote, ICA LA Senior Curator Amanda Sroka, and philosopher Rossen Ventzislavov who will discuss the philosophical aspects of Argote's process, as well as the improvisations and gentle conceptual provocations that emerged over the course of the exhibition period.
