Dear ICA LA Community,
This is the FINAL WEEK to see the Milford Graves: Fundamental Frequency and Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork exhibitions, which close to the public on Sunday, May 14. You do not want to miss these exhibitions, and we have a handful of memorable performances and events coming up that will allow you to engage in deep and meaningful ways with the artists and artworks on view.
While Milford Graves was a celebrated percussionist and musician, he was also an expert botanist. Channeling Graves’ in the garden, the final week of events kicks off on Tuesday, May 9 with a tour of medicinal plants at UCLA’s Botanical Garden. On Wednesday, May 10, dancer Roxanne Steinberg–who saw Graves and choreographer Min Tanaka perform together and worked with Tanaka on the development of Body Weather Laboratory–offers a special POV tour of the exhibition. The next day, improviser, collagist, and composer, Neil Young performs in the galleries for our final Beats & Beats Thursday. Closing out the Milford Graves exhibition programming is a double-header of performances on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13 with William Parker’s New Heart Trio at 2220 Arts & Archives.
That same weekend, our community programming continues with Intro to ASL courses in partnership with the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD).
As a reminder, we are closed to the public for a private event this Sunday, May 7, which is all the more reason to visit us next week in these last days to see, hear, and experience the sounds of Milford Graves and Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork at ICA LA!
We hope to see you,
Team ICA LA

POV Tour: Roxanne Steinberg on Milford Graves: Fundamental Frequency
Wednesday, May 10, 7–8pm, In-person
Join dancer Roxanne Steinberg for a special tour of Milford Graves: Fundamental Frequency at ICA LA. In 1993, Steinberg saw a performance with Milford Graves and Min Tanaka at Bennington College. Their performance led to an epiphany for Steinberg, who moved to Japan and worked with Tanaka on the development of Body Weather Laboratory, a forum for movement investigation. In 1988, she founded Body Weather Laboratory in Los Angeles, where she continues her dance, choreography, and body-based performance practice today.
