Community Figure Drawing Session
Date & Time: Monday, May 22nd, 6-9pm
Location: Kala Gallery
Facilitators: Kala Staff
Cost: $20-$35 (Sliding Scale) + Eventbrite fee
Come draw with us in the spacious Kala gallery! We will have a model for the full 3 hours during which participants can practice their figure drawing at their own pace, work on incorporating a figure into an existing piece, or however they’d like to use their time! Kala staff members – who are also practicing artists – will facilitate the session and offer any desired feedback or support. Kala will provide drawing boards and standing easels, but recommend that participants bring tools and surfaces of their choice to the session. Kala will have limited basic materials for general use (such as charcoal, graphite, and newsprint). The session will include a series of short poses (1 – 5min) as well as some longer poses (10 – 20min).
This community workshop is open to all ages 18 and above. The figure model will be unclothed for the duration of the drawing session. Masks are recommended but optional. Space is limited - register via Eventbrite.
California Humanities Grant
We are proud to announce that Kala is one of three grantees to receive a $5,000 planning grant from
California Humanities for the project Artists as Changemakers!
Kala Art Institute will work with a small research team and youth advisory board to plan and design an arts integrated civics and humanities program for middle school youth (ages 10-14, grades 6-8) focusing on artists as changemakers and creative problem solvers. Kala will work with neighboring schools in the tri-city area where Kala is located and where Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville come together. Building on Kala’s Artists-in-Schools, field trips, and onsite youth art programs, the project will combine studio art practices for middle school students with walking tours, podcasts, and storytelling that will ground us in neighborhood history and provide a platform for youth to explore subjects and issues relevant to their lives and the world around them.
