Our Perfect Simulcast Picnic

In just two weeks, we have the honor of broadcasting the inaugural production of our 2024/25 season, Puccini's Madame Butterfly. The simulcast, where we broadcast an opera for free at Santa Monica Pier and El Cariso Community Regional Park, is a wonderful annual community event that's a perfect setting for a picnic. LA Opera Wig and Makeup Season Prep

Reorienting Madame Butterfly

Opera is a beautiful art form that has been around for centuries, largely in European countries. This has led to one of opera's largest critiques, of it perpetuating the "white gaze." This gaze has often led to shallow portrayals of marginalized people, which is true for Madame Butterfly. When tackling a production of this classic, an opera company must find ways to preserve its beauty while eliminating the harmful stereotypes and tropes.
