Maine Women's Lobby Legislative Round-Up News : December 29, 2023

From: Maine Women's Policy Center

Dear friend ,

What a year! We saw some incredible wins for gender equity this year: moving forward major policies to expand access to care and caregiving (paid family and medical leave! childcare!), trans rights and dignity, and reproductive justice; grieving (and recommitting) as racial justice priorities stalled or faced vetoes.

Now we're gearing up for 2024, and we epect more big things. Our New Year's Resolutions?

Continue to work for feminist, gender equitable policies in and out of the State House, including reproductive justice (maybe a Constitutional Amendment?!), a budget that supports the real needs of families and communities (including salary fairness for ed techs, sexual assault advocates, and other under-valued, women-dominated professions); gun safety, and racial justice.

Hold lawmakers accountable with tools like our legislative report cards, and work to turn out voters in the fall in support of a more feminist Legislature.

Continue building coalitions and partnerships, like the Maine Paid Leave Coalition - now working on *implementing* the law we helped pass last year - and growing the ERA Coalition to continue our work to pass an inclusive Equal Rights Amendment, in part to honor our founder, Lois Galgay Reckitt, who passed this fall.

Create more accessible ways for Mainers to connect with the policy process and their lawmakers, like our Gender Justice Day at the State House (coming up Jan 9!).

We hope you will be a part of this powerful change for gender equity. Join us by signing up for the Day at the State House, volunteering for our programs, or making a gift to fuel our work today.

Happy New Year from our whole team - and here's to a more feminist 2024.

Destie, Dania, Catie, and Brook (and Ambureen, our teammate for the first half of 2023!).

Weekly Calendar

The weekly House Calendar is here. The weekly Senate Calendar is here.

The House and Senate kick off the 2nd Regular Session this Tuesday, January 3 at 10:00. The day will kick off with a rally with the Maine Coalition for Gun Safety.  We'll be there and we hope you will too.

The House and Senate are in session Tuesdays and Thursdays for the rest of January.

We're bringing gender equity to the State House! This event will connect women, girls, femme and nonbinary people to legislative advocacy and lift gender justice from the ground up!

Are you wondering how to get around the State House, how to introduce yourself to your Legislator, what the big issues of the session are, and want to connect with others working to end misogyny and racism in Maine? Join us!

January 3: Gun Safety Day of Action

From the Maine Gun Safety Coalition: Mainers from across the state will descend on the State House in Augusta to demand that our legislators pass strong gun safety legislation this year. It's time for our legislators to hear from the vast majority of Mainers who want these bills. Showing up in numbers that display the breadth and diversity of voices on our side will be vital to passing these bills, and YOUR presence is requested!

Join us to support speakers at a press conference and talk with lawmakers!

The press conference starts at 9:30 in the Hall of Flags. RSVP here.
