From: Moeller Fine ArtIt is my pleasure to present two exceptional early drawings by Henry Moore (1898–1986): Seated Female Figure, 1928, and Standing Nude, c. 1927. These robust works exemplify Moore’s mixing of different mediums-in this case, chalk, ink, watercolor, and crayon-in the drawings he made throughout his career. They also highlight the importance of his drawings within his larger body of work and showcase his remarkable skill as a draftsman.
“Because a work does not aim at reproducing natural appearances it is not, therefore, an escape from life-but may be a penetration into reality...as expression of the significance of life, a stimulation to greater effort in living.” - Henry Moore
Moore saw the human figure as a vehicle through which to express "more completely one’s feelings about the world than in any other way." He used a wide range of techniques and mediums to breathe life into two-dimensional works, creating impressions of volume, depth, and movement that echoed his sculptural work.
