In Memoriam

Bold, vivid colors distinguish the artwork of artist Jack Stuppin. His vibrant paintings celebrate the landscapes of Sonoma County and the North Bay with rolling hills, vineyards, and coastline with a colorful palette unique to his art. Lovers of his work said that after seeing his paintings they “…can’t drive through Northern California now without seeing the landscape in a different way.”

Jack Stuppin passed away on November 29, 2022, at the age of 89. For over a decade Jack was an important and influential member of the Museum of Sonoma County’s Board of Directors and our entire Museum family mourns his loss. A successful businessman, he was an early investor in technology. He served in the Marines and was then educated at Columbia and the San Francisco Art Institute where he became a member of its board. Jack joined the MSC Board in 2010 and he quickly became an important contributor to the Museum’s Board and exhibition program. He and his devoted wife Diane were very generous supporters of the Museum’s program of contemporary art exhibitions and Jack was instrumental in the opening of the Museum’s new contemporary art gallery in 2015. 

While we are all saddened at the loss of a dear friend of the Museum, we also celebrate all that he contributed to our organization and to the Northern California art community. We are fortunate that he and Diane Stuppin shared their support for our Museum by encouraging all those who wish to honor Jack’s memory to contribute to the Museum of Sonoma County. The artist reception was very well attended and Michael Cooper was on hand to talk about his work, share stories, and demonstrate the Ceiling Flapper, to the delight of the crowd.

We recently broke ground on Sonoma County Stories, a permanent Sonoma County history exhibition. Agriculture and the environment are central to these stories, as they are for our community. This exhibition, scheduled to open in 2023, will capture Sonoma County's rich history, defined by a confluence of cultures and people and a powerful connection to the land.

The exhibition features stories representing the many diverse histories and cultures of the county, including founders and workers of the agricultural community. We hope that this exhibition will be a tool for current and future generations to come and learn the role agriculture plays in creating this beautiful place we call home, and how to preserve our bounty.

As part of our Annual Fund Drive, a portion of all donations will go towards the Sonoma County Stories exhibition. Through the month of December, your name will be added to the permanent list of donors to Sonoma County Stories for a contribution of any amount!
