From: New York Indian Film Festival

In recent years, Indian independent films have taken on a range of pressing issues related to women's experiences, including gender-based violence, sexuality, and the intersectionality of caste, class, and gender. These films feature diverse female characters, portraying women in a more complex and nuanced manner.

The New York Indian Film Festival celebrates the contributions of female filmmakers and actors, providing a platform to promote social awareness and progress. By highlighting stories that center on women's experiences and perspectives, we empower filmmakers to challenge gender stereotypes, break societal norms, inspire change, and create a more inclusive and equitable society.

To further these objectives, we would like to highlight a few women-led production houses and organizations, such as those listed below. Follow and support them to help amplify the voices of female filmmakers and contribute to meaningful change:

Indian Women Rising: An initiative by Ekta Kapoor, Guneet Monga, Tahira Kashyap, and Ruchikaa Kapoor, this organization aims to showcase Indian female talent on a global stage.

Cinestaan Film Company: Founded by Rohit Khattar, this production house has supported several acclaimed female-directed films, including "A Death in the Gunj" and "The Hungry."

Women in Cinema Collective: Founded in 2017, this organization works to address issues of gender inequality and harassment within the Indian film industry, providing a platform for female filmmakers to connect and collaborate.

Women in Film and Television: advocates for equality in the moving image industry and supports women in every stage of their careers.
