Puerto Ricans proudly celebrate our Afro-Boricua traditions, but many don't know alot about our African ancestors, or the Motherland where they came from. Who were our Ancestors before they came to Puerto Rico? What are the traditions that are alive in Africa today?
Over the next several months, our season Celebrando 2024 Heritage Project - Madre Patria África - will present a series of programs that will share relevant history to present day, cultural traditions, and more through workshops, performances and the annual Salsa & Heritage Festival!
This livestream conversation - Madre Patria África - The Presence of Africa in Puerto Rico - kicks off the series.
Join us on February 25, 2024, 4-7pm CT for this exciting Livestream Charla (conversation) and Video Premiere of The Prince & The Pana, our 21st original musical. Our special guests, Afro-Boricua historians, presenters, and humanities experts include Dr. Pablo Luis Rivera, University of Puerto Rico Professor (in Puerto Rico), Melanie Maldonado, Founder and President of PROPA (in Florida), and Dr. Tekina-eiru Maynard, PRCC Executive & Artistic Director (Austin)!
This introductory livestream conversation will feature a highly energized discussion and review of the history of Africa in Puerto Rico. After our conversation we will enjoy the Livestream Video Premiere of The Prince & The Pana. Set in the mid-19th century - before the Abolition of Slavery in Puerto Rico - this play follows an African Prince and his journey to save his people. Our play includes the history of the Majesty, the last known illegal slave ship to come to Puerto Rico in 1859. The Prince & The Pana was performed before a live audience on December 9-10, 2023 in Austin TX.
