Republican Larry Hogan’s “Incredible Justices” Warn Voters About the Stakes of Maryland’s U.S. Senate Race for Climate

Hogan could be the 51st seat Republicans need to block action on climate

On Wednesday, Republican Larry Hogan’s “incredible justices” – special guests who are holding Hogan accountable for praising Donald Trump’s Supreme Court picks who’ve ripped away reproductive freedom, gutted climate protections, and sided with big corporations over working people – joined environmental advocates in Salisbury, MD to highlight the stakes of Hogan handing Republicans control of the Senate for climate action. The “justices” later followed Hogan at the J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake in Crisfield, MD.

“Every Republican that’s running to be Senate Republican leader has an abysmal score on LCV’s National Environmental scorecard,” said League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund Vice President of Political Affairs Craig Auster. “Larry Hogan’s first vote in the Senate would be a vote to undo all of the historic climate progress that we’ve made at the federal level, put the progress here in Maryland at risk, and support the extreme Project 2025 agenda that will benefit Big Oil, not Maryland families. Look no further than how he called Trump’s Supreme Court appointees incredible justices in 2022 right after the Court both weakened the government’s ability to fight climate change and overturned Roe versus Wade.”

“There is no doubt at all how Larry Hogan would cast his first vote,” said Sierra Club Maryland Chapter Political Chair Rich Norling. “He has said many times publicly that he is a ‘lifelong Republican’ and will vote with Republicans to organize and set the agenda in the Senate. So the decision basically is whether we’re going to turn the Senate over to polluters and their friends, or whether we’re going to elect a Senator who will support clean water, clean air and work on climate change.”

“Donald Trump’s MAGA Republican Party sees its path to a Senate Majority running through Maryland,” said Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Action Fund Executive Director Kevin Curtis. “So Maryland voters get to decide if the Harris-Waltz presidency – yes, I’m an optimist – has a partnership with the U.S. Senate led by Chuck Schumer, or is in battle with a U.S. Senate led by one of Mitch McConnell’s MAGA Republican successors. So that is why I’m here: to make the case that Larry Hogan’s candidacy is a threat to all of the progress made in the past four years on the environment. We must elect Angela Alsobrooks to the Senate.”

“During the Hogan administration, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environment became much weaker, decimated by attrition and dismissals of important planners and scientists to the point that environmental oversight was neglected,” said local environmental advocate Charles Stegman. “Anyone concerned about the environment cannot be proud of Larry Hogan’s environmental legacy as governor.”
