Reading Buddies
Pre-K to 3rd grade
Designed to support young children with their reading, Reading Buddies pairs your child with a Hotchkiss School student to be the older "buddy," eager to help the younger child practice their reading. The idea and the hope for the emerging readers is that connecting with another, older "kid" is a treat in itself, and that reading aloud to a "kid" is low-pressure. At the same time, the student volunteer (age 12-18) serves as a reading mentor, demonstrating how to stay calm while reading and how to conquer reading difficulties. The buddy will ask questions about the text and have a basic understanding of assessing and helping with reading comprehension.
Younger readers can meet their older "buddy" in person on the Hotchkiss campus, over ZOOM or here at the library. Whatever is most convenient for you and your family!
Additionally this Fall, an eighth grade SCS student will be available at the Scoville Library for in person tutoring or reading help on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30pm.
Kindly complete this form to be paired with your "buddy" today and enjoy a mentorship program that has also resulted in many life long friendships!
