Featuring Works By Bach, Handel, And Our Composers In Residence!

The Open Road is a pervasive symbol in the human consciousness. It can evoke a sense of calming freedom and spaciousness, or an enthusiastic wanderlust for adventure. Alternatively, it can symbolize a long, unknown path fading into the distance, seemingly without end or answer. In this program, which bears the name of Evan Fein’s featured work, we venture into The Open Road in all its forms, from joyous melodies fit for travel anthems to winding, intricate, and even spiritual journeys.

Fantastic Fusions

Exploring Chamber Music Inspired By Folk Songs, Poetry, Jazz And More!

So often, music has served as a vehicle in cultural exchange. As composers through the centuries sought to create new, mind-expanding works and push the boundaries of their compositional practices, they frequently found inspiration in the artistic styles and aesthetics around them. This program explores chamber music that owes its beginnings to a variety of influences, from folk songs and poetry to jazz and more.

Seven Hills Chamber Music's free concerts pair famous works of Classical music- like those of Mozart, Debussy, or Beethoven - alongside exceptional new music. With our composers-in-residence program, our young composer mentorship program, and our educational initiatives, we're committed to inspiring the next generations of artists. "The creative energy among the artists is tremendous'' (The News & Advance), from our dynamic and thematic concerts programs to our immersive pop-up events and community engagement. During the summer festival each August, our artists work with students in public schools, give masterclasses, have open rehearsals, and interact with our audiences - all to forge meaningful community connections through our passion for chamber music.

Music And Motion Picture

Featuring Live Scoring Of Georges Méliès’ "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" And Music By Erik Satie, William Susman, And More!

We all love the experience of going to the movies — the tension, adventure, superheroes, mystery, and music draws us into a fantasy world. Movies in the early 20th century were just learning how to tell a story with film as a novel technology, and were often simple. Theaters used to have a pit orchestra for every show, as the first films were silent motion pictures. There was no green screen technology, no computer-generated imagery (CGI), and not even sound until 1927. Tonight, we are recreating the experience through two early French films, Le voyage dans la lune by Georges Méliès and Entr’acte by René Clair, and presenting two movies of our own to William Susman’s Aria and Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel.

Powerful Passages

Finale Of The 2023 Seven Hills Chamber Music Festival. Works By Mendelssohn, Beethoven, And More!

This finale concert of the 2023 Seven Hills Chamber Music Festival delivers an energetic send-off to our concert season in Lynchburg. The dynamic music featured in this program explores the many meanings of the phrase “Powerful Passages.”

The word “powerful” often refers to great strength, but it can also indicate a commanding influence, or a potent, moving effect on one’s feelings or thoughts. “Passage” can refer simply to the act of moving through something, from one place to another, or to the path itself, but in the arts, it takes new meaning. It conveys a phrase of a musical composition, a detail of a work of art, or a portion in a written work. As you enjoy the performances, we invite you to ponder the phrase “Powerful Passages,” and to discover its multitude of meaning through the music.
