Skanfest U Is The Festival’s Educational Initiative, Open To All. This Year’s Topic Will Be Music And Home. It Will Explore How Composers Express A Sense Of Home In Their Music; How They Bridge The Cultural Gap Between Their Country Of Origin And Their New Homelands; And How Music Can Address Themes Of Dislocation, Rupture, And Healing. Get To Know Music By Chopin, Dvo?ák, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Korngold, And Tania León, And Prepare To Hear Music To Be Performed At The Festival, Including Festival Commissions By Kinan Azmeh (Syria), And Arson Fahim (Afghanistan).
Hear Exclusive Interviews And Live Performances By Festival Artists And Mingle With Your Fellow Music Enthusiasts Afterward Over A Glass Of Wine.

Four Weekly Sessions Are Led By Artistic Director Aaron Wunsch, Who Teaches At The Juilliard School.

Violinist James Ehnes’s Combination Of Stunning Virtuosity And Serene Lyricism Make Him One Of The Most Sought-After Violinists In The World. He Performs Regularly With Leading Orchestras, Such As The London Symphony And New York Philharmonic, And Recently Won A Grammy Award For Best Classical Instrumental Solo. Ehnes Makes His Festival Debut With Pianist Andrew Armstrong, Known For “Freshness And Spontaneity” (Gramophone), Performing Three Sonatas By Brahms.

7:00 Pm Backstage Pass: Composer And Clarinetist Kinan Azmeh Joins Festival Artistic Directors Aaron Wunsch And Julia Bruskin For A Conversation On His New Trio, A Skaneateles Festival Commission, To Debut This Evening.

Syrian Clarinetist Kinan Azmeh Is A "Spellbinding" Performer (New Yorker), And His Works Have Been Commissioned By The New York Philharmonic And The Silkroad Ensemble, Of Which He Is A Member. The Claremont Trio Performs A New Work By Azmeh, Commissioned By The Festival, And He Joins Them On Clarinet For Khatchaturian’s Rousing Trio And His Own Clarinet Quartet; The Trio Ends The Program With Brahms’ Rich And Ravishing Trio In C Major.

First Presbyterian Church

The Claremont Trio Is Known For "Exuberant" Performances With "The Kind Of Fresh Approach That Keeps Chamber Music Alive." (Cincinnati Enquirer) Here, They Perform Regal Trios By Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, Whose Masterful Music Was Severely Underappreciated In Her Own Time, And By Kati Agocs, Whose Intensely Romantic Queen Of Hearts Was Commissioned By The Claremont Trio. The Program Finishes With Franz Schubert’s Magisterial Trio No. 2, Based In Part On A Swedish Folk Song About A Lost Bride.

Hailed By The Strad For Playing With "Tremendous Heart And Beauty," The Ivalas Quartet Has Been Changing The Face Of Classical Music Since Its Inception At The University Of Michigan In 2017. Dedicated To The Celebration Of Bipoc Voices, Ivalas Seeks To Enhance The Classical Music World By Consistently Spotlighting Past And Present Bipoc Composers Such As Jessie Montgomery, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, And Eleanor Alberga.

Currently, The Ivalas Quartet Is The Graduate Resident String Quartet At The Juilliard School In New York City, Where They Study Under The Juilliard String Quartet. They Were Previously In Residence At The University Of Colorado-Boulder Under The Mentorship Of The Takács Quartet.
