Metal Paint Tubes And Napoleon Iii: The Glory Of France Gallery

As you enter the gallery, you will find yourselves in Paris, France, the epicenter of the Art World in the 19th century. The French government ran the powerful French Academie of Fine Arts (Ecole des Beaux-Arts) where only two artistic styles, Neoclassicism and Romanticism, were taught, shown and sold to the public. These styles will be observed and discussed in the gallery. However, nearing the mid -19th century, a revolution in the art world was beginning to evolve due to various factors. One being the invention of metal paint tubes, allowing the artists to paint outdoors (en plein air). Did the academic art world accept this new style as fine art? Hardly, but this is where Napoleon III was surprisingly helpful.

The Ring Home And Garden: An Italian Villa In Saginaw

Hear from Tom Trombley, Chief Historian of the Castle Museum, for this lecture! The architect of the 1904 Elizabeth Merrill and Clark L. Ring family home, Charles A. Platt, conceived the house and its landscape as one carefully designed composition. Donated to the community in 1947, it has served as a museum far longer than it did as a private home. This tour will explore the early history of the building and garden and help participants imagine what it would have been like to visit the Ring family in their new home in the first decade of the twentieth century.
