After a sell out inaugural season, Dare Arts is excited to announce that the Outer Banks Film Society will return in September for its second season to screen independent films, movie classics, documentaries, shorts and world cinema.

Outer Banks Film Society curator Gaye Morris has spent the last few months coordinating a fresh slate of films for the 24/25 season.

“I'm really excited that we have several films made by young, independent female filmmakers: Lisa Frankenstein, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, and Polite Society,” said Gaye Morris. “Our world cinema offerings include feature films from Denmark, France, and Mexico, plus a German film celebrating its 25th anniversary. Run, Lola, Run broke new film technology ground when it was released in 1999, but an updated release by Sony Pictures Classic shows us just what a good film it still is. All in all, we have a very strong schedule of films, plus the favorites from last year, MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival and Oscar Nominated Short Films.”

Films will be screened on select Tuesdays at Dare Arts in Manteo, unless otherwise specified. Doors will open at 6pm and films will start at 6:30pm.

“The Outer Banks Film Society’s inaugural season featured a wide variety of genres (classic, comedy, foreign, romance, and even Academy Award nominated shorts), which were all thoughtfully curated to surprise and delight,’’ said Outer Banks Film Society founding member Madeleine Dale. “And, it’s not just for film buffs, so bring your friends and neighbors! An introduction adds context before each viewing and a post-screening discussion fosters a sense of community. I can’t wait for the film society to start up again in the fall! Many thanks to Dare Arts for the enriching evenings.”

Unlike purchasing a ticket to go see a movie at the local theater, you join the Outer Banks Film Society through an annual or seasonal membership. An annual membership is $140 and includes 12 films, plus member-only discounts for other film related events, including the Surfalorus Film Festival in September and the Outer Banks Environmental Film Festival in November. Seasonal (fall or winter) memberships include six films per season.

Film society memberships can be purchased online at DareArts.org/filmsociety, over the phone by calling Dare Arts, and in-person at the Dare Arts Gallery in Manteo.

The Outer Banks Film Society will also offer enriched film programming that includes film-related speakers, special events, and filmmaker discussions.

College of The Albemarle student Satyendra “Doni” Banerjee’s short film Pup, which was submitted to the college’s film competition this past spring, will be shown to the Outer Banks Film Society on Tuesday, October 1.

“Miles Parker is completely distraught after the death of his grandfather, but when he comes across a note from his mother, she tells him that his grandfather still has one last gift to give him,” said filmmaker Satyendra “Doni” Banerjee. “This is a story that I came up with in the summer of 2018 when I was in somewhat of a dark place, but now that it’s complete, I hope you can appreciate the short film and enjoy it!”
