A Note from the Director

Dear Friends:

We were so happy to bring back Chapel Concerts at the end of October! The Mama Blue concert was the first event that we cancelled in March, 2020 so it was very fitting that she was the first one as we brought concerts back. Mama Blue and her band are incredible performers and we really did worry about them blowing the BRAND-NEW roof off the Chapel! Luckily not a shingle was lost! Stay tuned for our next concert announcement coming soon. 

Did you know that the artwork on exhibit at the Museum is available for purchase? A purchase of any piece benefits the artist AND the Museum, so don’t hesitate, the orange “sold” stickers are popping up quickly in the “6 Beaches” exhibit! 

We are rolling quickly towards the holidays and hope that you’ll put our very special events on your calendar.

Veteran's Cemetery Tour

H. Warren Smith Cemetery

November 6, 1:00 p.m. 

Join local history detective Johnny Woodhouse on a Veteran’s Day-inspired walking tour of the H. Warren Smith Cemetery on November 6 at 1:00 p.m. 

The leisurely 90 minute walking tour will uncover the stories of veterans from the Civil War through Vietnam as well as victims of the attack on the USS Stark. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions during and after the event.

The H. Warren Smith Cemetery is located at 1538 2nd Avenue N, Jacksonville Beach. Parking is available at neighboring Lee Kirkland Cemetery, 2-30 Penman Rd, Jacksonville Beach.

Volunteer Interest Meeting

November 12, 10:30 a.m.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Beaches Museum we are hosting a Volunteer Interest Meeting on Saturday, November 12 at 10:30 a.m. We would love to see new smiling faces added to our friendly group!

Boardwalk Talk: Local Indigenous Nations with Dr. Bossy

November 17, 6:30 p.m.

Join Beaches Museum for a Boardwalk Talk on local indigenous communities by Dr. Denise Bossy on November 17 at 6:30 p.m.

The Indigenous communities of Florida were far more numerous and powerful than the straggling Spanish town of St. Augustine or the short-lived French community of Fort Caroline. At its height, all of “Spanish” Florida consisted of only 1,500 people. But in the early sixteenth century, the Indigenous population of present-day Florida was well over 300,000.

Florida Chamber Music Project Concert

November 20, 3:00 p.m.

The Florida Chamber Music Project will begin their 10^th season with a concert on Sunday, November 20 at 3:00 p.m. in the Beaches Museum Chapel. 

Enjoy two contrasting pieces, String Quartet Op. 76, No. 6 by Joseph Haydn and String Quartet No. 1 in D Major, Op. 11 by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. 

Come hear the rich acoustics of chamber music and visit the historic Beaches Museum Chapel. All concerts in the series will be on Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Receptions will follow each concert.

"6 Beaches" Exhibit

In a continued celebration of Jacksonville based artists Beaches Museum has partnered with artists Dustin Harewood, Hiromi Moneyhun and Jennifer Lail to present 6 Beaches, a collaborative interpretation of the history of our Beaches communities. 

Harewood draws inspiration from his familial lineage and the 21st century world of desire for immediacy in all aspects of life and seeks to find nuance within vanishing moments in order to capture a narrative between histories. Moneyhun is a papercut artist, her pieces are consistently praised for their intricacy and their exacting standards. Weeks and often months in the making, each one is a demonstration of an astounding level of skill and a mastery of the medium. Lail’s paintings are deeply inspired by working in an environment dedicated to healing. Her work is an ongoing exploration of the way color-centric abstract art impacts environments and emotions.

This exhibit brings together the diverse backgrounds, inspirations and techniques of the artists in a celebration of Beaches history.
