First Responders Recognized For Rescuing Man From Abandoned Well In Ledyard

At the Ledyard Town Council December 14, 2022 meeting forty First Responders and Emergency Service personnel were recognized for their heroic actions to rescue of a man who had fallen into a 30-foot abandoned well on November 3, 2022.

Upon arriving at the scene First Responders found a man who was showing signs of hyperthermia as he was waist deep in water at the bottom of a 30-foot abandoned well that was on his property. Under the command of Chief Jon Mann, the concerted efforts of the emergency services immediately established communication with the man and implemented safety measures to prevent him from becoming unconscious, while the Submarine Base Rescue Team assembled a rope rescue hauling system. Subbase Rescue Firefighter Tyler Zani was lowered into the well with equipment to tie the man to himself and in less than four minutes both the men were safely pulled from the abandoned well.

The incident occurred at dusk making the rescue more challenging. The team effort involving the Ledyard Emergency 911 Dispatch Communications, Ledyard Center Fire Department District #1, Gales Ferry Fire Department District #2, the United States Submarine Base Fire Department, American Ambulance, Ledyard Police Department and Fire Police resulted in a positive outcome. From the time the Emergency 911 Call came into the Communications Dispatch Center to the safe rescue of the man was just over an hour.
