Wellesley's oldest resident, Herlda Senhouse, celebrated her 112th birthday on Tuesday, February 28.
More than 50 family members and friends threw a surprise birthday party for her. Some of the attendees flew in from Maryland, North Carolina, and Georgia to attend because "when Auntie Herlda turns 112, you don't want to miss that!"
Born in 1911, Herlda is the second oldest resident in the Commonwealth and is known for her sharp wit and sense of humor. Asked how she was feeling at 112, she replied "fair to middlin," drawing big laughs from the birthday crowd.
Originally from West Virginia, Herlda moved to Woburn, Massachusetts, as a girl to live with an aunt. She attended Woburn High School, and in 1931 became the first person in her family to graduate from high school.
Herlda, a life-long dancer, performed in jazz dance shows and founded the Boston Clique Club, a social club of dancers and musicians who raised funds to help educate Black students. Throughout her life, Herlda helped many Black students afford higher education and to this day, her circle includes friends of all ages.
At 112 years old, Herlda continues to add to her 'bucket list' for life. Her birthday wish this year - to meet former President Barack Obama.
