Have you been gifted a free zucchini this summer? Taken the family out for U-Pick blueberries? Purchased a local produce box or community supported agriculture (CSA) share? Stopped at a roadside stand for fresh veggies?

This is a time of bounty for local food in Michigan, and a busy season for Michigan farmers—including PhD student Will Brinkerhoff. Learn how Will is building better farms with his research on sustainable agriculture.

Starting in September, Museum@Home  will be issued on the third Wednesday each month and will alternate between family and adult editions.

Expert Expo: Scientist Spotlight
What is Sustainable Farming?

Audience: Teens and Adults
Grades: 6-12+
Duration: 25 minutes

PhD student Will Brinkerhoff grew up farming with his family just outside of Ann Arbor. After traveling the world, working on the land, and experimenting in the lab, Will returned to Michigan to help build better farms. His research involves integrating livestock production into current cropping systems, nurturing soil food webs, and borrowing best practices from nature.

Will Brinkeroff is a PhD student in the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) studying Resource Ecology Management. He gave this talk as part of the Scientist in the Forum program at UMMNH.
