MISSION :
One time there was a man who wanted to follow Jesus, and just to show how ready and willing he was, he said to him: “I will follow you wherever you go.”
“Wherever” is a pretty big piece of real estate! Just to make sure they we're on the same page, Jesus responded to him: “Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
I’ve often interpreted that to mean that Jesus was homeless. But there is another way to understand what he said to that man. Maybe Jesus meant to say that he was at home in places this man might not be comfortable in. Certainly Jesus could have laid his head any number of places; but apparently he chose not to.
It’s one thing to say: “Don’t let yourself get too comfortable.” It’s quite another thing to say: “Learn to be comfortable – at peace – wherever you might find yourself.” I think it was pretty hard to shock Jesus. It’s not that he condoned everything he saw, but rather, that he understood what he was seeing – isn’t that the point?
