About Us:
The Alpena Defensive Pistol League (ADPL) was formed over a decade ago to focus on skills required when using a pistol for personal defense of one's self or one's family. It has been an ideal way to increase a shooter’s skills, especially for those with a Concealed Pistol License (CPL). The group uses International Defensive Pistol Association’s rules and guidelines (www.idpa.com) however, we try to focus on the more practical skills when possible. Some of our group actively participates in state and regional IDPA matches, but most are interested in learning and practicing self defense skills with a hand gun. We are not associated with any law enforcement or military group, however, our members have a wide variety of skill levels, as well as varied amount of previous training. We also have ex-military and ex- law enforcement members in our group.
The monthly Saturday matches and weekly training sessions (Mondays) at Alpena Sportsmen's Club (West of Alpena on M-32) consist of drills and scenarios involving "shoot and no shoot" targets, shooting around doorways, strong and weak hand shooting, and shooting from various positions and distances. We periodically add back-up guns (small concealable handguns) and long guns (tactical rifles and shotguns) into the regular training.
