Hours: Year Round
About Us:
Bassetti Vineyards is located about 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean, along highway 46 near Cambria California. In a small coastal valley running parallel to the ocean, we have a small parcel that has been in the Bassetti family for almost 100 years. On this parcel we used to grow oat hay for the dairy or beef cattle business at that time. When we started Green Valley Flower & Herb we planted flowers, herbs and many assorted trees on this parcel. These crops are harvested and usually dried, then hand crafted into wreaths, swags and table pieces that are wholesaled to catalog and Internet companies throughout the country.
In the summer of 1998 we planted the first seven acres of our vineyard. With the guidance of John Alban, of Alban Vineyards, we ripped the soil, terraced it, and planted seven acres of Syrah grapes. This is a rocky knoll that is different than any of the remaining land. Being steep and rocky gives it very good drainage that makes it well suited to the Syrah. This location is close to the ocean, and is cool and mild in the summer months. We have a lot of days in the high 80's and 90 degrees with just a handful of 100's. Between these 80's, 90's and 100's we will get days of 70's to cool things off. At night we always cool down. With this location, our fruit will ripen later than the inland fruit, and the cooler, moist climate will produce more intense, darker color.
In 2000 we planted six more acres of Syrah. This planting included two different types of Syrah. The soil is deep, dark and rich. The vines will produce lots of vigor and will need to be pruned carefully to limit the amount of foliage. In 2004 another two acres were planted with Syrah. We are expecting great grapes from both of these plantings.
