About Us:
Central Baptist Church located in Church Road of Dinwiddie County,Virginia, was organized in 1873 by combining two small existing congregations located about nine miles apart. Mount Pleasant was located four miles north of Church Road and had been in existence for about forty years. The other congregation called Central, was located five miles south of Church Road. When the two combined, Church Road was selected as the site and the old Central building was moved from Center Star to a two-acre area purchased from Mr. Ben Ford at Church Road. The pastor of Mount Pleasant became the first pastor of the new Central and thus began a Baptist Church that has been active in serving the spiritual needs of Baptists in the area for 131 years. During its 131 years, Central Church has been served by 25 pastors. The first pastor was Reverend Hosia Crowder, who came from the Mount Pleasant congregation. Following him were many dedicated ministers who served the congregation well. Their lengths of service varied from two months, served by Rev. Henry Ferries, who was the victim of the 1918 flu epidemic, to the more than sixteen years served by Rev. David Angel.
The first church building was the one moved from Center Star in 1873 and it served the needs until 1893 when a new building was erected. A part of the present structure contains a portion of that 1893 building. In 1937, the building was remodeled and Sunday School classrooms were added on each side. During the ministry of Rev. John E. Houghton, the first educational addition was built and the interior of the main building was remodeled. This work was completed in 1958 and included new pews and central heat. Shortly afterwards, brick siding was added to the main structure to give the appearance seen today. In 1989, the new educational wing and fellowship hall were added to the rear of the existing structure.
