The building that houses Central Baptist Church is the second building on the current site. The planners of the first "meeting house" selected this site because of its "convenience, elegance and beauty". The building was dedicated early in 1800.
On November 14, 1863 fire destroyed the meeting house. The present brick building was built between 1864 and 1865 and was dedicated July 11, 1866. The building is also home to the "town clock" which is housed in its steeple. The interior design of the single vessel and recessed chancel corresponds to the simple form of the exterior. Remodeling was done in 1897 when the sanctuary was redecorated and an addition was made to the back portion of the building, consisting of an organ loft, a pastor's study and a kitchen. Steam heat and electricity were also added at this time.
Our Purpose is to make disciples of all nations, loving as Christ loves, teaching what Christ taught, and serving as Christ served.
Our Vision: We are a community united in seeking God's heart together, being transformed into the likeness of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our Mission: We are here to extend Jesus' mercy, grace, and love -- to each other, our town, our region, our world -- for the good of all and the glory of God.
We are a member of the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts and of the American Baptist Churches, USA.
