Big Rapids is located in Mecosta County, approximately 45 minutes North of Grand Rapids. It is the largest city in Mecosta County, with an estimated population of approximately 12,000 people. Big Rapids is home to Ferris State University.In 1884, later a Governor and U.S. Senator, Woodbridge N. Ferris established Ferris Institute located in Big Rapids. The Institute has grown and is now a University with an enrollment of approximately 10,000 students.
The University offers several diversified curriculum in seven separate schools, including the College ofOptometry and College of Pharmacy.The City has some beautiful parks to visit. The area also offers a wide range of activities such as golfing, hiking, bicycling, shopping, dining and sightseeing. Inner tubing and canoeing on the Muskegon River are fun, relaxing activities for all to enjoy.
