On August 13, 1791 at Acquinton Church in King William County, the Lower College Baptist Church (Colosse) was organized. On October 12, 1796, the place of worship was moved to the Old West Point Meeting House (St John’s Church). In the early 1800’s the membership began using the a frame building for the meeting place on a tract of land known as “Canton.” In 1837, the name of the church was changed to “Colosse.” The original building was destroyed by fire in 1850. The following year land was given to the congregation where the present sanctuary was erected in 1852 and dedicated in May of 1853. Expansions of the church through additional education and fellowship facilities occurred in 1954 and 1984. The music room was added in 2004.
Today Colosse looks to the future with expansion of our playground facilities for our children’s ministries and a building program for the future growth of our educational and fellowship facilities. Colosse Baptist Church has had a continuing ministry in our community for over two hundred years.
