Mission Statement:

Community Action Southwest serves as the catalyst to mobilize the resources of the entire community to enable families and individuals in Southwestern Pennsylvania to attain the skills, knowledge, motivations and opportunities to become self-sufficient.

About Us:

Community Action Southwest (CAS), a non-profit organization, has been serving Washington and Greene counties since 1965. Founded by a group of community leaders, the initial focus of the agency was to identify local conditions that led to poverty, sensitize the community to the incidence and conditions of poverty, mobilize private and public resources to impact on poverty and develop programs and services that would help eradicate poverty.

Our mission remains much the same today. Our goal is to mobilize public and private resources to deal with the causes of poverty, not just its impact. Our role is to provide a hand up, not a hand out, by incorporating self-help and education into all of our programs and services.

Nationwide, community action agencies are a network of independent organizations with a shared mission to help low-income persons and families become economically self-sufficient. Maximum feasible participation of the poor in program development, organizational governance and employment is a unique feature of community action agencies. This strategy is the strength and key to success for community action agencies across the country.

Today, Community Action Southwest operates over 50 programs serving almost 18,000 persons annually in the counties of Washington and Greene in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania. Our agency offers services to children, families and individuals at all income levels and is committed to ending poverty in our community. CAS has an annual budget of nearly $14,250,000 and employs about 300 individuals.

The agency is directed by a 22 member Board of Directors which is comprised of equal representation of the public sector (local elected officials), private sector (business, church and labor) and target sector (representatives of the poor who are democratically elected within their communities.

Community Action Southwest offers programming in the following areas: Early Childhood Services, WIC (Women Infants & Children), Family Economic Success, and Senior Services. The navigation bar above will help you find the service that meets your needs.
