Corpus Christi Ballet is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing outstanding professional ballet productions for the South Texas community. Founded in January 1974 as the Corpus Christi Ballet Theatre under the direction of Larry and Bettye Roquemore, the first season included Peter and the Wolf and an invitation from Maestro Maurice Peress, Music Director of the Corpus Christi Symphony, to perform the first production of The Nutcracker in December 1974. The 2005-2006 season's production of The Nutcracker will mark 32 years of continuous performances of Corpus Christi Ballet's The Nutcracker since that time.
In June 1985, Corpus Christi Ballet was renamed with the arrival of Richard and Cristina Munro as artistic directors. Since the 1986-1987 season, Cristina Stirling Munro, as sole Artistic Director, has brought her many years of professional experience and expertise to the company. Her influence and talent are particularly evident with the many ballets of classical repertoire, such as last season's Swan Lake.
Corpus Christi Ballet offered a subscription season beginning with the 1985-1986 season, and developed an association with the Corpus Christi Symphony, and more recently formed The Corpus Christi Ballet Orchestra.
Corpus Christi Ballet is an Honor company with Regional Dance America and is proud to represent Corpus Christi throughout the Southwest and participates in the Southwest Regional Ballet Festival.
Corpus Christi Ballet plays a major part in dance education throughout the city, with its premiere and innovative program, balletWorks for KIDS which includes lecture demonstrations, afternoon ballet classes in area schools, and Children's Spotlight on Ballet, performances at Selena Auditorium featuring highlights of the current public performance for area schools of the Coastal Bend.
It's season concludes in May its annual Spring Celebration which features a sumptuous luncheon, a spectacular Silent Auction, special performances of new Ballets, and Style Shows.
